Heated Vest vs Heated Jacket: Which One Is Actually Warmer?

The intuitive answer is wrong

Faced with a vest and a jacket at similar prices, most people assume the jacket must be warmer because it covers more of you. In heated clothing that intuition breaks down, because the limiting resource is not coverage — it is energy. Both garments run from a battery of similar size, and the jacket has to spread that same energy across a much larger area.

Sleeves also sit against a part of the body that is poorly served by contact heating. Arms are constantly moving, which pumps warm air out of the garment; they have a high surface-area-to-volume ratio, which means fast heat loss; and they contain relatively little of the blood volume that determines how warm your whole body feels.

The result is that in a like-for-like comparison, a vest usually delivers a stronger sensation of core warmth and longer runtime than a jacket built on the same battery platform.

How your body actually decides you are warm

Thermoregulation is driven by your core, not your extremities. When your torso is cold, your body constricts blood vessels in your hands and feet to protect core temperature — which is exactly why cold hands are usually a symptom of a cold trunk rather than an arm problem.

Warm the core and that constriction relaxes. Plenty of vest owners are surprised to discover that their fingers stop aching in the cold, despite wearing the same gloves as before, because the body is no longer rationing blood flow to the periphery.

This is the physiological reason the vest format has dominated heated clothing. It concentrates limited battery energy exactly where it produces the largest whole-body effect.

Layering: the practical advantage

A vest is a mid-layer. You can wear it under a rain shell, a work jacket, a suit coat or a parka, which means one vest works across every coat you already own and across a wide range of temperatures. A heated jacket is an outer layer, and an expensive one you have to commit to for the whole day.

That flexibility matters more than it sounds. On a day that starts at freezing and warms up by noon, a vest lets you shed the outer coat and keep the heat. A jacket forces an all-or-nothing decision.

Vests also travel better. A packed vest and a power bank take up less room than a bulky heated jacket, and airline rules on lithium batteries in cabin baggage apply equally to both.

When a heated jacket genuinely is the better buy

There are real cases for a jacket. If you work stationary outdoors in severe cold — ice fishing, motorsport marshalling, winter site supervision — and you already wear a heavy coat over everything, a heated jacket with a large external pack can replace both layers and heat the arms that a vest cannot reach.

Motorcyclists are another clear case, because wind chill on the arms at speed is punishing and many riders can draw power directly from the bike rather than from a battery, removing the runtime penalty entirely.

If neither of those describes you, the vest is the more sensible purchase, and the money saved is better spent on a larger battery.

Cost, weight and washing

Vests are consistently cheaper than jackets from the same brand, typically by 30–50%, because there is less fabric, fewer heating pads and a smaller controller. They are lighter for the same reason, which matters if you wear one all day.

Both are washable under the same rules — battery out, cool wash, no tumble drying — but a vest with fewer pads and no sleeve wiring has fewer flex points to fail. Over several seasons that tends to show.

The one place jackets win on cost is if they replace your existing winter coat entirely. If you were going to buy a new coat anyway, the price gap narrows considerably.

The practical recommendation

For most buyers — commuters, dog walkers, spectators, people who feel cold at home, anyone with a stiff back in winter — a heated vest worn under the coat they already own is the better answer. It is cheaper, lighter, lasts longer per charge, and produces a stronger core warmth effect than a jacket built on the same battery.

Buy a jacket only if you specifically need heated sleeves, and preferably only if you have a power source that does not constrain runtime.

Whichever you choose, prioritise the same two things: a battery measured in watt-hours rather than marketing mAh, and heating pads placed over the lower back and the back of the neck.
