The 5 Best Heated Vests We Tested — And The One That Beat Them All

We wore five battery-powered vests through a full winter of commuting, standing around in the cold and working in unheated spaces. Four were good. One changed how our tester felt at the end of the day.

The verdict in full

Why the Hilipert Unisex Heated Vest finished first

I have tested cold-weather gear for fourteen years, and I have become sceptical of heated clothing. Most of it does one of two things: it produces a fierce heat that dies after ninety minutes, or it produces a vague warmth you have to concentrate to notice. The Hilipert vest was the first one in a long time that did neither.

The difference is where the heat goes. Four pads sit over the chest, the mid-back and — crucially — the collar. Warming the back of the neck has an outsized effect on how warm the whole body feels, and it is the zone most competitors skip. Within three seconds of pressing the button the collar is warm; within a minute the entire torso is.

Four heating pads: upper chest, mid and lower back, and the collar.

The part I did not expect

What sold me was not the specification sheet. It was week two. I have carried a stiff, aching set of shoulders through every winter of my adult life, and gentle sustained warmth over the upper back loosened them in a way that a hot shower in the morning never managed to hold past nine o'clock. I stopped noticing the vest and started noticing that I was no longer bracing against the cold.

The three heat levels are sensibly spaced — roughly 40–45°C, 50–55°C and 60–65°C. In practice I used the top setting for three or four minutes to get up to temperature and then dropped to the lowest, which is where the quoted sixteen hours of runtime comes from. That is a genuinely full day on a single USB power bank.

It disappears under a coat

The body is memory cotton with a Lycra stretch panel, and the shell is water-repellent and windproof. It has the drape of a light windbreaker rather than a padded gilet, which means it slides under a suit jacket, a work coat or a rain shell without the shoulders bunching. That matters more than it sounds: a heated vest you cannot wear under your existing coat is a heated vest you will stop wearing in February.

Where it loses points

One real drawback: it is not on Amazon. Hilipert sells direct from its own store, so you do not get Prime delivery and you do not get thousands of third-party ratings to read through. If that is a dealbreaker, the CHAPAREL vest at #2 is the strongest Amazon alternative on this list — it just costs meaningfully more and skips the collar heating.

At the current verified price of €69.99, it is also the cheapest vest in this ranking, which is not a sentence I expected to write about the winner.
